The Decobelles are a dance troupe that I was a part of for several years, performing vintage style dance routines at special events in Northern California. I often helped sew costumes for the group, and was excited to be the sole designer and producer of the costumes for 17 dancers for the 2009 Art Deco Preservation Ball. I designed a two piece costume with long, split sleeves and a short circle skirt. I chose dark olive stretch velvet with coordinating sheer poly chiffon for the sleeves, with gold sequin accent trim. The colors of the costumes complimented the venue of the ball, which was held at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California. I created a simple pattern that could be easily graded and fitted for a range of body types. I fitted the costumes to each girl, and sititched everything myself. The costumes came out beautifully, and we had a wonderful performance to the song “Doin’ the Uptown Lowdown.”
