This custom client commission was a red vinyl cape for the tv show “Scream Queens.” For this project I sourced the red vinyl and matching polyester lining. The cape was cut in four pieces, which allowed me to create a very full sweep. It was fully lined and bag-hemmed, which was a challenge! To prevent the lining from sagging below the vinyl, I had to pin the hems while the cape was draped on a dress form. I built the shoulders out on my narrow female dress form to approximate the width of the man who would be wearing the cape, then carefully pinned the two layers evenly together.
The collar was created as a separate piece that was snapped into the cape. A foam insert kept the collar standing. The costume designer for the show was adamant that the collar have a very clean, sharp edge, which required a lot of precision. To help with this, I whip-stitched the upper edge of the foam so when inserted inside the collar, it would have a more narrow, clean edge. The result was a clean, structured collar that fit beautifully into the cape.
While I hoped to maybe catch a glimpse of my cape on the show, I was thrilled to see it featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, shortly after I made it!
